• In 2022, Chile enacted a law prohibiting smoking within 80 meters of highest tide of the sea, or of a river bank, or of the shore of a lake.
  • Violators will be fined between US$70 and US$280.

• In 2022, Spain was the first country in Europe to ban smoking on all its beaches.
  • This is because of a citizen petition against beach pollution.
    • The petition had 238,000 signatures.
  • Anyone caught smoking on the beach in Spain will be fined €2,000.

• In 2023, Mexico banned smoking on all of its beaches.
  • The ban extends to all parks and playgrounds.
