Smoke-Free Beaches in France

• In 2011, the town of La Ciotat, France was the first town to implement a smoke-free beach in Europe.
  • La Ciotat is the southeasternmost commune of the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolis in the Bouches-du-Rhone department of the Cotê d'Azur province.

• The legislation came as a result of the local council receiving requests for more child friendly beaches.
  • The ban had three objectives:
    • Reduce secondhand smoke;
    • Help smokers quit;
    • Reduce cigarette butt pollution.
  • Since the ban took effect, the beach at La Ciotat has attracted larger crowds.
