Smoke-Free Beaches in France
- In 2011, the town of La Ciotat, France was the first town to implement a smoke-free beach in Europe.
- La Ciotat is the southeasternmost commune of the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolis in the Bouches-du-Rhone department of the Cotê d'Azur province.
- The legislation came as a result of the local council receiving requests for more child friendly beaches.
- The ban had three objectives:
- Reduce secondhand smoke;
- Help smokers quit;
- Reduce cigarette butt pollution.
- Since the ban took effect, the beach at La Ciotat has attracted larger crowds.
