Downloading and Installing MySQL

Background

MySQL is not installed. The purpose of this exercise is to obtain MySQL. Once downloaded, the software must be unpacked, verified and installed.

Objectives

• Obtain MySQL;
• Verify MySQL;
• Install MySQL;
• Post-Installation.

Steps

1. Download MySQL
• Start a Web browser; Firefox is preferred for this.
• Point the browser to http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/5.0.html
• Locate the section that best fits your operating system and architecture.
• Download the MySQL server RPM archive into /tmp from a mirror site.
• Download the MySQL client RPM archive into /tmp from a mirror site.
2. Verifying the MD5 Checksum
• Verify that both MD5 checksums match the ones provided on the MySQL download page.

md5sum package_name

• Alternatively, use following syntax to verify that the MD5 checksum matches the one provided on the MySQL download pages.

rpm --checksig package_name

• Are the signatures returned identical to the ones shown on the download page?
3. Install MySQL
• Use RPM to install the software package.

#rpm -Uvh package_name

4. Start the MySQL Server
• Change location into the top-level directory of the MySQL installation.

#cd BASEDIR

• Start the server running in the background.

#bin/mysqld_safe --user=mysql &

• What does --user=mysql do?
5. Verify the MySQL Server is Running
• Use mysqladmin to verify that the server is running.

#bin/mysqladmin version

#bin/mysqladmin variables

• Verify that data can be retrieved information from the server.

#bin/mysqlshow mysql

6. Assign Passwords
• Obtain the hostname of the machine.

$hostname

• Log on to MySQL as root.

$mysql -u root mysql

• Use the mysql command SET PASSWORD to set the password for root to 'newpw'.

mysql>SET PASSWORD FOR 'root'@'localhost' = PASSWORD('newpw');

mysql>SET PASSWORD FOR 'root'@'hostname' = PASSWORD('newpw');

• Use the mysql command SET PASSWORD to set the password for an anonymous user to 'newpw'.

mysql>SET PASSWORD FOR ''@'localhost' = PASSWORD('newpw');

mysql>SET PASSWORD FOR ''@'hostname' = PASSWORD('newpw');

• Make the changes take effect.

mysql>FLUSH PRIVILEGES;

7. Grant Privileges
• Use the mysql database.

mysql>use mysql;

• Give localhost permission to access all databases.

mysql> insert into
->(host(host,db,Select_priv, Insert_priv, Update_priv,
->(Delete_priv, Create_priv, Drop_priv)
->(values('localhost','%','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y');

• Give hostname permission to access all databases.

mysql> insert into
->(host(host,db,Select_priv, Insert_priv, Update_priv,
->(Delete_priv, Create_priv, Drop_priv)
->(values('hostname','%','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y');

8. Shutdown the Server
• Use mysqladmin to shut down the server.

  #mysqladmin -u root -p shutdown
