Retrieve Information

• The SELECT statement is used to pull information from a table.
  • The general form of the statement is:

    SELECT what_to_select FROM which_table WHERE conditions_to_satisfy

  • what_to_select indicates the columns from the table.
  • The WHERE clause is optional.
  • An asterisk (*) means everything.

• The WHERE clause can be used to select records based on one or more criteria.
  • For example:

    WHERE species = 'dog' AND sex = 'f';
    

    WHERE species = 'dog' OR sex = 'f';
    

    WHERE (species = 'cat' AND sex = 'm')
    -> OR (species = 'dog' AND sex = 'f');
    

    WHERE age >= '21';
