Problems Running mysql_install_db

• The mysql_install_db script generates new MySQL privilege tables.
  • It does not overwrite existing MySQL privilege tables.
  • It does not affect any other data.

• When running mysql_install_db the following problems may be encountered.
  • mysql_install_db fails to install the grant tables.
    • An error message is generated:

      Starting mysqld daemon with databases from XYZ mysqld ended

    • Look in the XYZ error log file.
  • There is another mysqld process running.
    • This indicates that the server is running, in which case the grant tables have probably been created already.
  • Installing a second mysqld server does not work when one server is running.
    • This occurs when there is an attempt to install a second server in a different location.
  • Not having write access to the /tmp directory.
    • This occurs when there is an attempt to install a second server in a different location.

What if I have problems starting the server?
