What is a Well Known Port?

A well known port, also called a priviledged port, has the following characteristics:

• Usually is on the server side.
• Is defined by RFC 1590.
• Also defined in:
  • %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\services
  • In UNIX, in the file /etc/services
• Its number is assigned by IANA.
• Its number is less than 1024.
  • Which are usually reserved by the system.
